In Memoriam: Harvey deKleine (1965–2026)

It is with great sadness that the ColecoVision and ADAM community says goodbye to one of our own.
Harvey Richard deKleine
February 6, 1965 – August 12, 2026
Known throughout the ColecoVision community as 5-11under, Harvey passed peacefully on August 12, 2026 at the age of 61, with his wife Elaine beside him and the sound of his guitar being played. He had been battling colon cancer for several months. He is survived by Elaine and their three children — Alaynah (Tom), Derek (Sennet), and Isaiah (Hannah).
Harvey was a builder, in every sense of the word.
For twenty years — from his first ColecoVision credit in 2006 — Harvey contributed to this community as both programmer and hardware designer. Many will remember his games: Jetpack (JETP4K) in 2006, a side-scroller where players dodged rocks while gathering diamonds; Squares!!; and the ambitious Wrong Way demo. But it's Harvey's hardware work that touches the most homes in this community — often invisibly.
Harvey designed many of the PCBs used in modern ColecoVision cartridges. He produced the analog AV-Out PCB for both the ADAM and ColecoVision — the board that gave our vintage systems clean video, dual mono audio, and separate Y-Pb-Pr color adjustment on modern displays. He built the electronics inside the CollectorVision Arcade Quality Controller. He was the solderer-of-choice for both Team Pixelboy and CollectorVision, which means if you own a modern ColecoVision homebrew cartridge from the last decade or so, there is a very real chance Harvey's hands assembled it.
His most ambitious project — CV 1.2, a full ColecoVision clone — was on hold. But the vision spoke to the engineer he was: someone who saw what was possible for our platform and quietly went to work making it happen.
Harvey was more than his contributions to our community. He was a musician, a husband, a father, and part of a beautiful community in Niagara that meant a great deal to him.

Harvey wrote a song called Morning. One of its lines:
"It's a brand new day and I feel okay 'cause I'm filled with hope."
That hope is what Harvey helped build into this community for twenty years. It's what he leaves us with.
