**A Question for the Community: What Exactly Is ColecoVision GX?**
With ColecoVision GX starting to appear more frequently in ColecoVision discussions, I have a question for everyone:
**What exactly is ColecoVision GX, and should we consider it part of the ColecoVision community in the same sense as the original system, ADAM, homebrew games, modern ColecoVision-compatible hardware, etc.?**
I'm asking this as a genuine question and not as criticism of the people behind the project.
From what I have been able to determine so far, ColecoVision GX is an officially licensed use/revival of the **ColecoVision name**, being developed by Gamebient. Their website describes a new platform with new games and an emphasis on digital game ownership.
What I'm less clear about is the actual connection to the **ColecoVision platform we have been supporting since 1982**.
Is GX hardware compatible with original ColecoVision cartridges or software? Is it based upon or compatible with ColecoVision architecture? Are GX games being developed for the original ColecoVision or capable of running on it? Is there some technological or historical connection that I am overlooking?
Or is the connection primarily the licensing of the **ColecoVision name and trademark** for an otherwise new gaming platform?
I think that's an important distinction for those of us involved in documenting and preserving ColecoVision history.
Obviously, owning or licensing the name gives GX every right to call itself ColecoVision GX. That's not really the question.
The question is more about **how we, as a community, should categorize it.**
For example, we've always welcomed new ColecoVision games, replacement hardware, FPGA systems, flash cartridges, expansion modules, emulators and other projects because they directly interact with or preserve the original ColecoVision ecosystem in some way.
Where does ColecoVision GX fit?
I'm genuinely interested in hearing what others think—and especially from anyone involved with GX who can explain the connection and what the project ultimately intends to become.
**Is ColecoVision GX the next generation of ColecoVision, a modern extension of the original platform, or an entirely new gaming platform carrying the ColecoVision name?**
